The number of police officers moonlighting to make ends meet has doubled in two years in some forces as thousands take second jobs ranging from uber drivers and masseuses to property developers and film producers.

Data obtained under Freedom of Information laws reveals the biggest rises are in Cheshire, Essex and South Wales where the numbers taking second jobs jumped by at least 100 per cent despite a crackdown demanded by the police watchdog because of potential corruption risks.
