Backed by the likes of actor Leonardo DiCaprio, investors are devouring shares in a $5 billion vegan unicorn, with the company bagging a return of 160 per cent in one day

Beyond Meat is a classic disruptor stock. It's now worth about $5.3 billion and loses money, and is not promising when or if it may ever turn a profit. So what? It has captured the attention of investors looking at longer-term trends, including the rise in vegetable-based foods, particularly in developed countries, and heightened interest in the environment.

The company neatly appeals to the growing band of what are called "impact investors" - a cohort that goes beyond environmental, social and governance screening to actively generate a measurable, beneficial social or environmental impact alongside a financial return.Interestingly, one of the major backers of Beyond Meat was the largest meat producer in the US, Tyson Foods, which sold its 6.5 per cent stake into the float.

The $US1.4 trillion global meat market is enormous and the meat mimickers' market is tiny by way of comparison. Its particular segment is meat substitution. It produces patties for grocery stores and fast food businesses that look like beef patties, feel like beef patties and taste like beef patties.

Beyond Meat is not the only company addressing the meat substitution market and new entrants are popping up like mushrooms. One of these is Tyson Foods, which is now looking to set up in competition with the company it originally backed, while food giant Nestle is set to launch its own version of a plant-based burger.

They lost $30,000,000 last year...

veganism is for people with no palate. Vegetarianism will do.

I would invest in this as i believe in it, but doubt many of the key investors are vegan, especially the meat based companies, which are now competing with their own version of vegan burger.Just to attract share buyers?I find this as unethical as a renewables company trading coal

Pump and dump!

Does this unicorn fart rainbows? What utter poop

Plant-based is the new low-fat. To fight the meat bogeyman we're turning to something far worse, ultra-processed foods. Unbelievable.

What about womanizing and drinking alcohol and smoking, that's what this guy does best. He is a very clever fraud. You want to waste your money ? go right ahead.

Stupid people are easily parted from their money it seems. I’m loathe to invest in something I don’t even understand.

160% in one day? That’s from the investment influx, no?

“carnivores to herbivores. The flexitarians - the food-eating equivalent of a hybrid vehicle “ I just discovered I am a flexitarian, because I once ordered the vegetarian moussaka at the Napierhotel In Collingwood 🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️

The only genuine vegan diet is not to eat at all...

clickbait perfection
