The latest headline act for this summer’s festival is legendary hip-hop crew Wu-Tang Clan, which plays June 23 at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. Tickets, from $69, go on sale May 3 at 10 a.m. at coastaljazz.ca.
The Wu-Tang Clan show is further evidence of the deep relationship between rap and jazz that the Coastal Jazz Society’s Rainbow Robert has been pointing out with excellent programming for a few years. Philadelphia’s The Roots are also playing this year’s festival. A host of other performers at smaller venues also embrace the funkier, urban side of music-making. Many will be appearing at the many free concerts that the festival presents during its 10-day run.
Be sure to look over the festival program to catch free concerts by New York’s Too Many Zooz; A Tribe Called Red’s DJ Shub; Ghana’s delightfully quirky King Ayisoba; and many others. Program guides will be available the first week of May at some JJ Bean outlets, Vancouver Public Library branches, the Tourism Vancouver Visitor Centre, Vancouver community centres and other locations.
