SAN ANTONIO - They're hard to trace, they have no serial numbers, and you can assemble them with a kit. 'Ghost guns' were popular with the cartels for many years, but now, that trend is changing.
"One thing that will be immediately apparent is there will be no serial number or manufacturer on the lower part of the gun," said Robert Topper, the Assistant Special Agent in Charge for the ATF Houston Division. They were more difficult to trace, but the task wasn't impossible. "The reliability of those guns is still not as good as your regular manufactured firearm," Topper explained.
"The investigation part of that is absolutely difficult, but that's where we we pair up with our federal, state partners to develop those investigative leads," Weddell said.Authorities urge you to leave all weapons at home instead of in your car, or invest in a glove compartment safe. You can also park in safe, well lit areas.
