A man has been charged over the theft of a life-sized gorilla statue, bringing an end to a heist that captivated the nation. The statue, known as “Gary”, was ape-napped from a retirement village on St Helena Rd in the Melbourne suburb of St Helena on June 6.

Gary the gorilla returns home. Victoria Police investigating a tip-off narrowed Gary’s location to Reservoir. An Air Wing helicopter crew then spotted the 1.5m primate hidden between two sheds. Police searched the property on Monday and seized Gary, along with 24 suspected stolen drivers’ licences and a quantity of prescription medication. The fibreglass silverback was reunited with his admirers at the retirement village on Wednesday.
