Elizabeth Young lost her daughter Jade during the horrific stabbing spree in Bondi and is using her grief to call for more mental health support to try to stop such a tragedy happening again. The mass attack at the Bondi Junction Westfield in Sydney’s east in April left six people dead. As well as Jade Young, a 47-year-old mother of two, also killed were Ashlee Good, 38; Dawn Singleton, 25, Pikria Darchia, 55; Yixuan Cheng, 27; and Faraz Tahir, 30. A dozen more people were injured.

“Please, in the long shadow of the horror of Jade’s death, I beg you as the voice of three shattered households please actually do something about the discrepancies, the disparities, the inconsistencies.” Australia’s mental health system was in crisis and immediate action was needed, she said. “Think as ordinary humans, think as a mother, a father, a husband, a sister, a brother,” she said. “Find the courage to work together to co-ordinate action on mental health reform and funding.
