, her third collaboration with filmmaker Ti West, Mia Goth plays an up-and-coming underground star who earns her Hollywood breakout in a delirious horror sequel. The irony is not lost on the 30-year-old.
“Sometimes yeah, if it’s a good one,” says Goth. “I just like good movies in general, regardless of the genre.”So what signifies a good horror movie to her? “Hmm… Great performances. Horror movies that are character-driven. When I think of the ultimate horror movie, like, it’s driven first and foremost by those performances from Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall, and then everything else comes after that. As an actor, that’s what I look for in movies.
The X Factor: The final film in the trilogy follows Maxine into the seedy world of LA’s ’80s skin flicks.Discovered at an all-ages music festival and signed to a modelling contract at 14, Goth never formally studied acting, settling for the School of Lars von Trier instead. “I was gonna go to school and then I gotand I decided to go do that instead,” she says of her first role in the Danish director’s controversial 2013 film .
“Look, it’s one thing to see that on paper, but it’s another thing to actually see someone do it – and then do it over and over again,” recalls West. “It’s the climactic moment of the movie and it’s entirely on her shoulders to carry this emotional load throughout that scene, and she just did it. I watched it happen and I was like, okay, this is a perfect encapsulation of what she’s capable of.
