Officers were patrolling the area because recent pop-up parties at vacant homes resulted in numerous shootings during the past few weeks.

"It is a traumatic time for the community; it is also a traumatic time for the department," said Dayton Police Chief Kamran Afzal.According to Afzal, officers were patrolling the area Saturday night because recent pop-up parties at vacant homes resulted in numerous shootings during the past few weeks. In one of the shootings, seven people were hurt.

Afzal said the officers tried to make contact with the teenager, who was standing in the road when he began running away. According to Afzal, officers started chasing him and opened fire when he turned toward the officer with a gun in his hand. He said officers and a nurse gave the suspect first aid then transported him to a local hospital, where he died.

Afzal showed a picture of the handgun that was recovered at the scene. It was a handgun with an extended magazine, which the chief said had been modified to be fully automatic with 30 live rounds and one in the chamber. Afzal said it would only take a second to fully unload the clip. The names of the two officers involved in the shooting have not been released, but the chief said both have been on the Dayton Police Department for six years.
