I sort of adopted Roll and whoever among the band members would want to sleep over at my place on the second floor of Bistro Hippo which I owned and managed. Life back then was all about music. We didn’t plan anything as a couple. We didn’t even have our own place in Manila. We were regular guests at friends’ homes throughout those struggling years. The music and our friends kept us going. And then Roll and I ended up as a I was in my early 20s, fresh out of college, working in my first job in Makati, when I met Roll at Larry’s Bar in 1990.
Once, I went with Cocojam to Boracay where they played, and stayed there for a month. My father went to bring me home, but I decided to stay and be Roll and the band. Going back to Manila, I stayed with Roll in Pasay at Pepito Bosch’s place, where I met many artists and interesting people. I took everything in, and I learned so much about belonging, despite being homeless.
