Australian TV legend Daryl Somers has been named Victorian of the Year. At a presentation on Monday morning at Melbourne’s Town Hall, the 72-year-old former Hey Hey it’s Saturday host dedicated the award to his late friend and fellow TV star John Blackman, who died last month aged 76. “It is an honour. I’m a born and bred Victorian. You think about the highs and lows in life and this is a high for me at the end of a rather solemn week,” Somers said.
“He is not here, but in part I’d like to dedicate this award to him because we had an endearing friendship. I love the guy. We went back over 50 years.” Somers also thanked his team and said his biggest supporter was his wife Julie. “I relish the opportunity to publicly thank Julie for supporting me throughout my career,” he said. Somers, a gold Logie winner, is known for being the former host of Hey Hey it’s Saturday and Dancing with the Stars.
