A hot air balloon became tangled in power lines during a crash in rural NSW, near the VIC border, on Sunday morning. Those on board the balloon were trapped in the basket for some time, but no one was injured. A multi-agency response to ensure the safety of those on board began in a paddock at Buronga just before 9am. NSW Police was only engaged initially to help find a safe place for the balloon to land, a spokesperson said.
The basket was already on the ground by the time Fire and Rescue NSW and NSW Rural Fire Service crews arrived. “It was tangled in power lines,” A Fire and Rescue spokesperson told 7NEWS. Because downed power lines send ripples of energy outward through the ground, the balloon passengers remained trapped until Fire and Rescue NSW and NSW Rural Fire Service could coordinate with the energy provider to switch off power to the area.
