WA taxpayers are forking out a pretty penny to keep expired rapid antigen tests in a warehouse — and it will cost millions more to finally dispose of them. The state’s stockpile of close to 20 million unused tests is set to be destroyed by the end of 2024, at a cost of $4 million.

Health officials appearing before parliamentary estimates on Thursday revealed the tests would be burnt and turned into energy at a plant in Kwinana, in Perth’s south. Until then, taxpayers will foot the monthly $75,000 bill to keep them securely stored in a warehouse. The RATs played an important role during the height of the pandemic, quickly detecting the spread of COVID-19.
