Malaysian-born singer Namewee has always surprised fans with his unconventional music videos and shocking collaborations. After teasing a collaboration with the one and only Hong Kong actor Anthony Wong , Namewee finally released the highly anticipated track “ZhaFit ” and the accompanying music video.
Over the past few days, Namewee has shared numerous teasers for the new song titled “ZhaFit', which loosely translates as 'to hold' or 'to control”. As shown in his social postings, Namewee and Anthony’s latest track is a homage to the “Young and Dangerous ” film series and an iconic character from the Hong Kong actor’s decades-long career - the infamous triad leader Tai Fei .Sure enough, the song and music video had lots of references to the movies and the Tai Fei character.
Besides honouring the Tai Fei character and the cult favourite film series, Namewee also revealed that the song is a tribute to the golden age of Hong Kong cinema. According to the singer, his role as a director in the music video symbolises the difficulties faced by directors who want to make a name for themselves in today’s film industry.
The music video, filmed at Yizhong Street in Taichung City, Taiwan, also featured some notable Taiwanese content creators who replicated scenes from the “Young and Dangerous” films, including the climactic gang fight. Namewee admitted that he was scared to film this scene for the music video because he was afraid of possibly getting beaten up while he stood amidst the crowd.
