Despite all the CNN logos filling viewers’ screens, and the non-stop hype that the network had piled onto Thursday’s prime time debate between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump, anchors Jake Tapper and Dana Bash mostly receded into the background as they moderated.
CNN had made clear ahead of time that its moderators would act as facilitators, not participants. Its chair, Mark Thompson, called Biden and Trump “the stars of the show.” On that front, the network succeeded. While Trump has a record of steamrolling debate proceedings and jeering moderators, on Thursday he evinced a new-found discipline, rarely interrupting his opponent or either of the CNN hosts. The result was an evening notably free of the crosstalk or chaotic moments that may have compelled the moderators to interject.
But on Thursday, the muting capability seemed to better suit Trump’s televisual skill set. His bombast, often free of facts and context, was a stark contrast to Biden’s often rambling and unsteady responses. Trump was better at packaging sound bites into the time allotted. And Tapper at one point found himself urging Trump to make even a half-hearted attempt to answer the question that the anchor had just posed.
