Airport rail mediator backs skyrail at Tullamarine

An underground station should not be built at Melbourne Airport unless the airport operators can show it makes commercial sense, a federal government report into the stoush over a long-awaited rail line to the site has found., handed a report with three key recommendations to federal Transport Minister Catherine King earlier this month.

“The report recommended against further Commonwealth and state consideration of an underground option at this time,” King said in a statement. King has sent the report to the Victorian government and the airport operators, and encouraged them to work constructively on solutions. The report also recommended refreshed modelling on the capacity of the Tullamarine Freeway, which will be led by the federal Transport Department.
