Legendary actor Gena Rowlands, who played the senior version of Allie Hamilton in The Notebook, has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.Allie also battled the disease in the 2004 film, a role the 94-year-old star shared with Rachel McAdams, who portrayed the character in her early years opposite Ryan Gosling.Based on Nicholas Sparks' romance novel of the same name, viewers witnessed the romantic tale of Allie and her admirer Noah Calhoun unfold in the movie.

The family is no stranger to Alzheimer's, which is a type of dementia that affects people's memory, thinking, and behavior. Cassavetes' grandmother, actor Lady Rowlands, also had the disease. It is a progressive condition, with symptoms worsening over time.In an interview with O magazine in 2014, Gena Rowlands—whose career has spanned nearly seven decades—opened up about her mother's struggle with the disease.
