The death of a baby girl has prompted warnings about the danger of leaving children unattended while restrained. The nine-month-old died days after she became caught in the harness of her car seat and asphyxiated. She was left in the car to finish drinking a bottle of formula after the family arrived at her grandparents’ home in New Zealand in August 2020. Her parents, two brothers and twin sister went inside the home while she was left in her car seat.
“Almost her entire brain was severely and irreversibly damaged,” the coroner’s report said. “This damage was consistent with a lack of oxygen to the brain.” The little girl remained unconscious and intensive care support was discontinued. She was kept comfortable until her death two days after the incident. ‘Much loved and cared for’ “It appears that was a much loved and cared for baby,” Coroner Janet Anderson said.
