“We were just excited to see the fruits of our labor,” said Houston County Superintendent Brandy White.

This is the first year Alabama students could be held back for not passing the reading portion of the Alabama Comprehensive Assessment Program. When it comes to the Wiregrass, Houston County Board of Education saw the highest pass rate of any other district, with 96% of its students reading on or above level.

“With it being means for retention, you know, we really tried to look at the data and tried to make sure that we had every student ready,” said Superintendent White. “The students bought into that too. We showed the students the data, and the teachers really worked hard at improving in some of the areas where we were deficient.”Nearly 30 schools saw a 30% increase or more in its pass rates.

“Just read with your students as often as you can,” said Superintendent White. “We’ve got a plan that works, so the more you can be involved and work with the teachers, the more it’s going to help your child.”
