A Darwin man is accused of human trafficking offences relating to working conditions on his fishing boat. The 47-year-old is facing additional charges after he was originally charged in December last year. The initial charges were prompted by the rescue of two men in crocodile-infested waters in northern Queensland. They alleged they were threatened by their employer on board his fishing boat. The man is scheduled to appear before Cairns Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
Police allege five more people have been identified as victims of the man’s mistreatment on board the fishing boat. The man is now facing 15 new charges: He faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in jail if found guilty. “The AFP, together with our law enforcement partners, are committed to protecting the community from human trafficking, wherever it may occur,” AFP acting Superintendent Tim Puchala said.
