Sir Ian McKellen, who played Gandalf in the extremely popularmovies, fell off a London stage during a fight scene in a play after tripping over stage props. The actor was hospitalised, but is recovering well.Sir Ian McKellen, 85, screamed out in agony as he tripped over props and plunged off the stage during a West End performance on 17 June. A staff member rushed on stage to help him. Many of the shocked audience members were in tears as medics took the acting legend to hospital.
McKellen tumbled off the front of the stage in a ‘belly flop fashion’ just before the intermission ofis a production of Shakespeare’s Henry IV Parts One and Two. It started its 12-week West End run in April. At first, audience members thought it was part of the performance, until the actor screamed out.
Theatre staff evacuated the audience members from the theatre at around 20:00 while medical personnel assisted the actor. Luckily, there were two doctors present in the audience who also assisted. The actor was hospitalised. The theatre consequently cancelled the show, according toreported that McKellen is in ‘good spirits’ after being hospitalised. A theatre spokesperson said that he had undergone a scan and medics said that they expect him to make a speedy and full recovery.
