Ninety per cent tax for a day's work: The dilemma facing Aussie mums | ErykBagshaw

Separate modelling run by Ben Phillips at ANU's Centre for Social Research and Methods found tax rates to be clearly lower under the Coalition across different household groups.

Labor has not ruled out offering further tax cuts if elected but will not guarantee any more before the election on May 18. Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show before having children women are just as likely to work as men but many drop out of the workforce to look after children. Some never go back.

"And this is just with one child and I have a lot of friends with two kids and there’s just no way they can go back to work before the kids are at school," she said."We definitely need to be making childcare a lot more affordable for women who want to be at work. For me personally, and for most women I know, we have to be at work full-time to get the better job and the better salary to be able to ultimately have a better life to our children.

ErykBagshaw Pay for your own kids. It's your choice to have kids.

ErykBagshaw The day we get a government with enough balls to allow income splitting in households will be the day that family fairness begins. Until then, they can spare me the rhetoric of caring!

ErykBagshaw Women, you want it all, children and a career! Why are you complaining now? Isn’t this what feminism espouses, choice and empowerment!

ErykBagshaw 20 years ago I ran into this issue with my first child. I can’t believe we are still making this about a women’s earnings and not considering the lifetime impacts of these “choices” and the structural barriers that make it so difficult to share parenting and work GenderEquality

ErykBagshaw Solution is to move away from market-dominated childcare to more affordable, well-regulated, higher-quality public provision funded by fairer, more extensive revenue as in Sweden where women's workforce participation is 10 percentage points higher than Australia NordicPolicyCtr

ErykBagshaw Does a household on equivalent wage of $157000 really need a higher subsidy? And where are the added advantages of extra superannuation, salary increases, positive mental health and insurance against divorce/death of primary earner calculated?

ErykBagshaw How did we get to this place and why do we continue to put up with this ridiculous system? This is not the first election where pols have shown (fake) concern for the financial difficulties facing parents and families who want to work. AusPol billshortenmp ScottMorrisonMP

ErykBagshaw Blame people like Gillard who have made childcare more expensive by their early learning policies and the like. These policies require more better qualified workers who naturally cost more to employ.

ErykBagshaw Dole, Dole, uber alles!

ErykBagshaw Yes childcare should be much more affordable - but why is childcare always presented as a woman's cost? It's a rubbish assumption that childcare costs should be offset against the mother's wage. Where are the dads and family incomes in this?

ErykBagshaw you don't have to have kids

ErykBagshaw You can blame Gillard for mandating university graduated babysitters in childcare centres auspol2019

ErykBagshaw This is an unbelievable article. It personified the nanny state. There are so many different forms of welfare available, work becomes a disincentive.

ErykBagshaw I thought I was going bad paying 55% (47%+8%HECS) plus 10% GST on whatever I have left & then 30% on my super. & Bill wants to increase taxes & people wonder y companies shift their profits o/seas, we all would if we could

ErykBagshaw Child care should be government owned & operated just the same as public education. Subsidies to private operators just push up fees.
