Wearing a a black hood, balaclava and sunglasses, a groundworker arrived at court today to deny felling the world famous Sycamore Gap tree.
His co-accused and fellow groundworker Daniel Graham, 38, of Millbeck, Grinsdale near Carlisle, Cumbria, had been 'unavoidably detained' and the court was unable to set up a video link to enable him to appear. The prosecution had used an index known as CAVAT, Capital Asset Value for Amenity Trees, to value the Sycamore. It is believed to be around 200 years old, and one of the most valuable trees in UK legal history.
It assesses physical attributes and the type and size of a tree and looks at the community tree index to assess value. Northumbria Police made a number of arrests after the tree was felled. A teenager and man in his 60s were both told they faced no further action. The tree had been popular with millions, with many travelling from abroad to see it and be photographed next to it. Its many fans included the Hollywood director of 'Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves'.
