Sydney’s Malt Shovel Brewery is set to close at the end of August, bringing an end to more than three decades of production at the site. The Camperdown brewery, in the city’s inner-west, was first established by Chuck Hahn in 1988 and sold to Lion Nathan in 1993. Popular beverages including James Squire, Eumundi, New Belgium and Little Creatures are produced at the site. It comes after multiple breweries have closed nationwide.
All production at Malt Shovel will be transferred to other Lion sites and if closed, redeployment opportunities will be explored. It is “incredibly sad” to see the brewery on the chopping block, Malt Shovel Head Brewer Allison Macdonald said.
