A New Zealand man’s life changed forever when he was hit by a reversing forklift while working in the country’s largest kiwi fruit and avocado pack house. The man’s leg was run over twice, causing injuries that required his leg to be amputated below the knee — but the horrific incident has now resulted in major safety advancements for the industry, WorkSafe NZ said on Tuesday.
My mental health has been up and down, it is physically difficult for me to play with my grandchildren, and sometimes even lying in bed is painful,” he said. “My injury had a very bad effect on my retirement savings, as I’d planned to work for another five or 10 years, but I’ve not been able to.” The victim was compensated more than $NZ123,000 for the injury, and the company has committed to sweeping safety advancements and initiatives as part of the undertaking costing more than $NZ500,000 .
