As state lawmakers take steps to criminalize Drag Story Hours, Cuyahoga County Council just gave one local theater money to improve security so it can continue hosting them.

Drag Story Hour events have drawn controversy nationwide in recent years from those who don't believe youth should be exposed to drag queens, but Cleveland's Near West Theatre says it promotes literacy and fosters important discussions about diversity, inclusion, gender stereotypes and other LGBTQ issues.CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cuyahoga County Councilmembers have approved $35,000 in one-time stimulus money to improve safety and security at the Near West Theatre, Inc.

Later, on a call with Shaker Heights police as they checked his property, “I heard my wife and children screaming in a car outside our home,” he recounted, choking up. He petitioned Councilman Martin J. Sweeney, in whose district the theater sits, to give $10,000 toward the cause, but after hearing the story, Councilmembers Cheryl Stephens, Patrick Kelly, Sunny Simon and Pernel Jones, Jr., also contributed from their own stimulus funds, bringing council’s total support to $35,000. Before the threat, the theater was hosting at least one story hour every quarter, as well as a holiday show, attracting over 100 attendees, according to Obertacz.
