To clarify, we here at Vogue are not anti-engagement rings. We are not anti-jewelry and we certainly are not anti-gifts. Rather, we are very much pro-gifts—especially glittery gifts that arrive in small velvet boxes. And while of course, we can appreciate the obvious appeal of a sparkly diamond ring, we also understand that there are certain situations when it’s okay, and maybe even preferable, to consider proposing without a traditional diamond engagement ring.
Perhaps, in these situations, it’s best to eliminate an engagement ring altogether, at least, for the time being. But proposing empty-handed may not sit quite right with those who appreciate the finer things in life. Our solution? Opt for another piece of proposal jewelry to pop the question with, an alternative engagement ring, if you will.
