The body that decides on immigration appeals is getting a revamp. Though some familiar faces remain.

Political perks that benefit both major parties are rarely reformed. And so, for choosing to actually do something about the Administrative Appeals Tribunal – too often a well-paid sinecure for party insiders and hangers on – Attorney-GeneralLast week, parliament passed legislation establishing the Administrative Review Tribunal, which will replace it. It is, in function, the old AAT, only with appointments now subject to a departmental “merit” assessment.

After an interview with a departmental staffer to assess their “merit”, many have managed to cling on. And given the AAT has long leaked like a sieve , murmurs of these assessments have made their way to us.One of the most intriguing faces offered a position at the ART – should he take it up – is Bleak City barristerthrew out one of his verdicts for having plagiarised slabs of text from the government’s own submission.

It appears others with obvious Liberal links, regardless of their sometimes considerable competencies, have not. Eight current members have already banded together to seek legal advice on their harsh treatment .Others are keeping quiet because they’ve been deemed “meritorious”; not offered a role on the new body, but kept instead in a pool of candidates who may be called up at a later date.
