GAM TROI VALLEY, Vietnam—For 18 years, Dao Anh Khanh worked as an undercover policeman, spying on artists and reporting on what they were up to—until, that is, he decided to become one himself.
Now 60 years old, he has become one of Vietnam’s best-known performance artists since quitting the police at the end of the Cold War. He has exhibited paintings in the U.S. and Europe. People flock to his home in Hanoi to see his installations, in which he often writhes, catlike, to a pounding rock soundtrack.
Viet Nam (spelled that way in the 60's) was one of the most beautiful countries w/gentle hardworking people. The job I had was to build roads, airports and installations, not for the people, but to protect the governments. Delighted to see the people roar back.
