While it’s not uncommon for online launches to suffer from technical issues, this could not have happened at a worse time for Bungie, trying to launch Destiny 2’s biggest expansion to date, The Final Shape.and well into the night players were either unable to log in, unable to travel in-game or kicked out of missions. The problems were broken into two main parts:
First, there was an issue where players kept seeing a message that the servers were not online, starting from its 1 PM ET launch, when they were very much online. They hadn’t crashed, as some players were able to get in, but the error message persisted for many players anywhere from 1-6 hours in some cases . But then things did not improve much.
By the end of the night, the issue became error codes within the game itself, namely CURRANT errors that did not let players travel to locations or begin/end missions. I was able to play a stretch of about four full missions, but I was eventually hit with CURRANT errors to the point where I had to give it all up around dinnertime.
The most significant problem here is that many missions end with triggered cutscenes to relay the story. But if you were CURRANTed out of a mission, there is a chance you may have missed a cutscene, if there was one, and you cannot go back and watch it. But it’s hard to check if youmiss a hugely important cutscene after a particular mission, as the error prevented me from watching it. I have no idea how many players may have missed this cutscene or others, badly damaging the game’s storytelling.
As of this morning, things seem better and today may be turnaround time. But it is certainly not the launch that Bungie wanted to see on a day as important as that. No, it doesn’t doom the entire expansion or anything, but it certainly kicked things off with a lot of frustration, which quickly drained a lot of excitement.Our community is about connecting people through open and thoughtful conversations.
