As depicted in the first two episodes of the new series that is now streaming exclusively on Hulu, Sterling and his wife Rochelle or "Shelly" amassed a real estate empire in Los Angeles, which allowed them to purchase the NBA franchise in 1981.

After the tape was released, the NBA took swift action against Sterling and enforced a lifetime ban. They also gave him a financial penalty of $2.5 million, which is the maximum fine that the NBA is permitted to give. On the day that the recording was leaked, the Clippers were set to play the Golden State Warriors in the first round of the playoffs. The players contemplated boycotting the game altogether but decided against it.

Sterling Unsuccessfully Sued Shelly, Adam Silver & The NBA For Damages Sterling claimed he did not authorize Shelly to sell the team Even after the sale of the Clippers to Blamer, Sterling was far from finished. He sued Shelly, Adam Silver, and the NBA for damages, claiming that he had never given Shelly authorization to sell the team in the first place.
