Here it is, then: the first Will Smith movie made since we discovered, at the 2022 Oscars, what a bad boy he really is. Will we still be able to luxuriate in his limitless charisma and laborious quipping after he, after all, that turned him from a sitcom actor to a movie star, thanks to an open shirt in a pulsating chase sequence. The film was a weak throwback to 80s buddy-cop films, only with two black leads – Smith and comedian Martin Lawrence – and an enormous explosions budget.
Will Smith and Martin Lawrence ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’ ended with its heroes restaging the Bay of Pigs before seeking sanctuary in Guantanamo Bay, while a belated third instalment,, attempted to integrate its macho cops into the modern world. Gone were the gay jokes; now our heroes respected women and encouraged people to go to therapy.
There are also fleeting moments of credible emotion: Lawrence tempting Smith into a poignant duet of their theme tune; an unexpectedly affecting story of redemption for Scipio. But there’s also so little here that’s new. You can see the absence of ambition behind everything the film does. Except in one key area. At the midway point, Smith gets to offer a heartfelt and fittingly vague apology . Then, in the last act, after suffering his second anxiety attack of the movie, he is returned to his senses by Lawrence repeatedly slapping him across the face. Now Smith has been slapped too, and we can forgive him.
