Thames Water has been criticised for supporting planning applications for thousands of new homes in Oxfordshire by reassuring councils its facilities could handle increased sewage flows despite evidence to the contrary. The estate’s toilets would feed into the STW, which was due to be upgraded by 2025 but this has now been delayed until the 2030s.
EA data shows sewage from facilities operated by Thames Water flowed into water bodies in Oxford for 2,096 hours in 2023, during 134 spills. This was an increase of 1,900 hours from the 164 hours of discharges the year before, the The firm responded affirmatively, claiming that the additional flows “can be discharged based on the information submitted.”
The EA objected to this claim, citing the STW’s lack of capacity to treat sewage as one of the primary reasons behind this objection. Shareholders have refused to inject more funding into the company, arguing that the regulator Ofwat has not given it enough “regulatory support” and had made the firm “uninvestable”.
