The Summer Box Office Is Flopping—And ‘Quiet Place,’ ‘Bad Boys: Ride Or Die’ Aren’t Likely To Save It

The summer box office has been so far marred by a series of near-misses and lackluster sales that have set it up to drastically underperform when compared to last year's blockbuster season—and June's big releases aren't expected to dramatically move the needle as the industry limps toward a less-than-stellar year overall.

Without a Marvel film to kick off the season—the first summer without one since 2009—and with the so-so performances of could-have-been-hits like “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” and “Argylle,” analysts are predicting the summer movie season will just barely clear the $3 billion mark, June will bring the release of three big films that could make a dent if they succeed, but even if they meet projections, they aren't expected to be the big break that could save the season:"Bad Boys: Ride or Die" isto gross between $80 million and $85 million in its first weekend and"A Quiet Place: Day One" isSome of summer’s biggest films are slated to release later this season.
