Taoiseach Simon Harris blasted the family of Enoch Burke for committing "thuggery" after he was accosted while canvassing in Mayo on Sunday.
The canvass continued as the Burke family filmed and followed the Taoiseach. “This is the Taoiseach of our country running away,” one stated. As he leaned in the passenger window of one passing car, Mr Harris said: “Sorry about this rude man”. A spokesperson released a statement on Sunday evening on behalf of Deputy Harris relating to the chaotic incident.
"Although it was a very small number of people, today’s behaviour cannot be accepted and should never be normalised and a full Garda investigation should be carried out. The people of Mayo were warm and welcoming today and the Taoiseach really enjoyed meeting so many people across much of the county and thanks them for their time."
