Sam Edington, 44, is a luxury buying agent who works with celebrities and the ultra-rich to help them find their dream homes in central London. As the Netflix hit Buying London becomes the most controversial property binge-watch on TV, he tells Hannah Fearn what it’s like to work within the glamorous and competitive world of prime London propertiesis great entertainment and fantastic PR for Daniel Daggers, but it’s not a true reflection of high-end property in London.
Some of the bigger names we work with are the nicest people. I had an A-list British actor, a big Hollywood name, call me up directly and ask me to meet him. It wasn’t his PA or private office, he simply phoned me up from Spain and got chatting. He had actually found me on Google by himself. It wasn’t until he rocked up on our first viewing together that I realised it definitely was him. But we found him what he was looking for: a family home in Chelsea. We play tennis together now.
The misconception is that buying agents like me only deal with the super rich but that’s not the case. Some of our clients have huge budgets of tens of millions, but the average home we help find and purchase is around £3m. We also work for first-time buyers; we recently helped someone secure a flat at £750,000.. We do a lot of work for family trusts, and for parents buying for kids, wanting to let Little Johnny loose with a million pounds. That’s what drives London prices up.
Our longest search took three years. This couple was pretty indecisive but the property they eventually bought had 67 viewings, 15 initial offers and ended up having 18 sealed bids on it. We won it not because it was the highest offer but because our relationship with the agent gave the seller confidence that we were going to proceed.
