The prize, valued at $3000, is decided upon by the Art Gallery of NSW staff who unpack and hang the Archibald entries.

Adnate said he met Baker Boy - real name Danzal Baker - over a decade ago and was awed by his talent as a dancer, performer and artist.The pair previously collaborated on Baker's Aria award-winning album"With this portrait, I aimed to encapsulate the journey of my dear friend Baker Boy from his roots as a young Indigenous performer from Arnhem Land to the music icon he has become today," Adnate said in a statement.

Among the other finalists announced today include, Shuan Gladwell for his symbolist portrait of activist Julian Assange and former People's Choice Award winner Angus McDonald for his portrait of Indigenous academic professor Marcia Langton. Archibald Prize 2024 finalist, Camellia Morris' portrait of Anthony Field titled, 'Wild Wild Wiggle'.
