Australian tennis great Pat Rafter has been unveiled as the first Big Freeze slider for the King’s Birthday AFL clash at the MCG this year. The annual event started by Neale Daniher marks its 10th anniversary this year, increasing speculation around just who might take the plunge in support of FightMND next month. Daniher learned he had Motor Neurone Disease in 2013 and has far outlived the 27-month life expectancy that more than 2000 Australian face from when they are diagnosed.
“Just sitting there, let’s do it, but I don’t know — winter in Melbourne, jumping in some cold water, eh, doesn’t excite me now all of a sudden.” Rafter said he knows who else is jumping but won’t name names. “We’re going to have some fun,” he said, admitting there will be nerves compared to walking out to play a grand slam final. “One thing I know is I knew tennis and I knew what to expect. The ice bath thing, nothing prepares you for jumping into a big tub of icy water.
