Tom Holland's return to the West End stage in Romeo & Juliet has divided critics after it's opening night at the Duke of York’s Theatre last week.
The BBC's Hugh Montgomery wrote in his two star review: 'It's a depressingly lifeless affair, which somehow manages to be both overstated and underpowered'. 'Relative newcomer Amewudah-Rivers, by contrast, transcends her glum surroundings and is the real saving grace: she has a conversational command of the verse common to the best Shakespearean actors'.
Giving the show three stars she said: 'The chemistry is most definitely there, even if it feels deliberately restrained in Jamie Lloyd’s turbo-stylised production, which comes with all his theatrical signature marks: alluring visuals, dark glamour and a tonne of atmosphere'. Before adding: 'In contrast, this deserves to be a star-making turn for Francesca Amewudah-Rivers, who has triumphed over the torrent of online racial abuse she received when cast'.
In contrast The Telegraph gave a five stars branding the play 'mesmerising' and a 'once-in-a generation production'. The Financial Times' Sarah Hemming was also full of praise and gave the show four stars: 'Holland’s riveting Romeo is wan, pinched, lost in thought when we meet him, his tightly cropped hair making him look young and vulnerable. He seems stranded between youth and adult, traumatised by the simmering violence around him and desperately in search of love'.
