Spotify's music-streaming Car Thing needed a smartphone app to run, and is now being replaced by that smartphone app., a curious little piece of hardware designed to make listening to its music offerings in the car easier. The idea, it seems, was to give listeners with older vehicles a modern interface for navigating and enjoying Spotify.

Spotify says the Car Thing will be discontinued December 9, 2024, but stranger still, it also says current users' devices will brick themselves on that same date. Per the company, after that date, "Car Thing will be discontinued and will no longer be operational." Spotify further suggests users find a way to responsibly recycle their devices.
