Amber Benson smirks in The Nightmare Gallery with images of Owen (Justice Smith) and the Pink Opaque episode guide from I Saw the TV Glow

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Summary A24's latest psychological horror film, I Saw the TV Glow, pays homage to many of the 1990s television shows that inspired writer-director Jane Schoenbrun. In terms of atmosphere and story, I Saw the TV Glow is heavily inspired by cult classics like David Lynch and Mark Frost's Twin Peaks, but, more than anything, the film is in conversation with Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Related I Saw The TV Glow Soundtrack: Every Song In The Movie & When They Play With music being a formative part of Jane Schoenbrun's own teenage years, they were determined to curate a distinct soundtrack for I Saw the TV Glow. Being Buried Is A Huge Theme In I Saw The TV Glow's The Pink Opaque Being Buried Alive Is A Theme In Buffy - Literally & Metaphorically Close Early on in I Saw the TV Glow, Owen's father, Frank , says The Pink Opaque is a show "for girls" and forbids Owen from watching it at home. This prompts Owen to sneak out of the house to watch the show with Maddy. In order to avoid being found out, Owen lies and says that there's a sleepover planned at a friend's house.

Ultimately, Owen runs away from Maddy again, refusing to be buried and unearthed. Instead of looking inward or taking action, Owen refuses to confront their transness. As a result, Owen is crushed under the weight of living a false life. The theme of being buried has very clear implications for Owen's journey, but it also echoes the idea of "burying" queer and trans characters.
