Six weeks after the release of the viral Netflix hit, you may have heard more about the furore than the actual show - but it's a masterfully nuanced work of arthas gone viral – some would argue for all the wrong reasons. In it, he tells what he describes as the true story of his prolonged experience of being stalked by a woman named “Martha” – and how a prior experience of violent sexual abuse precipitated the way in which these events unfolded.
It’s incredibly compelling TV – so compelling that, living as we do in this era of true crime and internet sleuthing, within days of the series being released, the identity of the “real Martha” had been found online. Days after that, this “real Martha” – a woman named Fiona Harvey, who somewhat confusingly claimed that she knew the character was based on her despite “not having watched it” and “none of it being true” – was giving an hour-long exclusive.
If you haven’t watched it yet, you might have heard more about the furore than you have about the show’s nuance, tragedy and humanity. But as tempting as it may be, we can’t let obsession with the “real” events eclipsewas also longlisted for three National Television Awards – one Drama Performance each for Gadd as Donny and Jessica Gunnings as Martha, and one for New Drama for the series as a whole.
Perhaps it was naïve, or, if you believe some of the Reddit theories, strategic on Netflix’s part. But this doesn’t negate the fact that the show sheds light on the complexities of abuse, psychology and human relationships in a rare, nuanced way. Unlike true crime,would be just as brilliant regardless of whether it was based on real life .
This is because Martha is only one part of the story it’s telling; the detective work and viral interest generated by the show is engaging with it at surface level. The stalker storyline is scaffolding propping up an even thornier exploration of how Donny was broken by abuse – he was groomed and raped by a successful comedy producer helping him get ahead in his career.
