Author Marian Keyes has admitted she thought if she quit the booze, she would have no friends. Ms Keyes reflects on finding herself in sobriety, her political awakening as a 15-year-old ‘intellectual goth’ and why Danny De Vito would play her in the movie of her life as Ryan Tubridy’s latest guest on his podcast series The Bookshelf with Ryan Tubridy.
“I didn’t find out who I really was or what my characteristics or my strengths were until I stopped drinking because I used alcohol to make me not shy or make me not self-conscious. And I was really afraid that if I couldn’t drink anymore that I would be mute and friendless for the rest of my days – and it didn’t turn out like that at all,” she said.
She said: “It showed me that poverty has nothing to do with being at fault. That poverty is generational. Or it’s down to bad luck. really, really quick. “And that none of us are exempt but those who are supported by lots of things like a good education, by connections, by a family, a tight friendship group, having the right accent and all of that, that they don’t understand what it is like to be that lacking in absolutely everything. It just opened my eyes to a sense of responsibility.
