A grieving Perth father is appealing for change to grape packaging after his son choked to death on the popular fruit. Toddler Zaire, or “ZaZa”, had been enjoying a mother’s group outing at Burns Beach on January 15 when the horrific incident unfolded. ZaZa, who was just weeks from celebrating his second birthday, had been offered grapes by another toddler. His father Brian Bwoga told 7NEWS.com.au he was watching on as a “proud parent” when his little boy came over holding his neck.
Close to 500 people were also treated in hospital for food-related blockages. Experts say the size and shape of grapes mean they can plug a child’s airway if not chewed properly and can be difficult to dislodge. Babies and young children are particularly vulnerable to choking because their airways are soft and narrow and they are still learning how to eat safely.
