Eight years ago this spring, I received a package from HBO Canada that had a curious note along with the usual DVD screeners. It was from the show’s two co-creators, and they asked that in writing about the show, reviewers not reveal the twist at the end of the pilot episode.
The press materials explained that this was HBO’s television adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s successful fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire, which was long thought to be unworkable. I had never heard of it, as evidenced by the fact that I called it A Song of Fire and Ice in that first review, but I was sucked in right away.
I started as a viewer, became a reader, and then eventually faced a weird choice between the two. Let me tell you, did I ever make the wrong one.
