A worker’s right to ignore unreasonable out-of-hours contact from their boss should expressly include when they are on approved leave as well as staffing arrangements, the peak union body says. Right to disconnect laws passed by the Albanese government will come into effect from August 26, or a year later for small businesses. They allow employees to ignore work-related contact when they are not working when it’s reasonable to do so.

The employee reported feeling bullied and suffered such severe anxiety she was unable to work for 18 months. “The lines between work and personal life have been blurred, and I think we need to pull those back into line,” Hawker told Sunrise. Hawker said a lot of employers were contacting their workers at inappropriate times. “In this particular case, the contact was deemed to be inappropriate, excessive, and unreasonable,” she said.
