HOWIE CENTRE, N.S. — The Red Farm is, to say the least, an ambitious development underway just outside of Sydney on Kings Road.
“We were so welcomed right from the beginning,” Mertinitz told the Cape Breton Post at the Red Farm last week, ahead of a weekend of entertainment ranging from jazz and blues jam sessions to a clubbing night featuring two DJ sets. First, a 12-room motel. It’s under construction and Mertinitz believes it could be open as early as August. He said the motel provides another accommodation option for some guests attending events at Red Farm, compared to the usual options in downtown Sydney about seven kilometres away.

The facility opened in August for live music, weddings and other events, which the bar's operator said has received warm reception from its visitors. LUKE DYMENT/CAPE BRETON POST - LUKE DYMENT/CAPE BRETON POSTThe property was formerly a farm run by the Tobin family but in 2019, it — consisting of the buildings and 53 acres of land — was purchased by Verag Logistics.
The 2022 business plan also listed some more possible developments at Red Farm, including an organic grocery store and brewery. However, the plan stated those remain merely possibilities rather than already-established amenities like the Red Bar-n or event tent. He figured doing that at a former farm would make for a special experience with visitors. The Luxbauers — who also often visited Cape Breton alongside Mertinitz — agreed and pursued the purchase.
