ichael Brand has been director of the Art Gallery of NSW since 2012. He lives in Elizabeth Bay, Sydney, with his wife Tina and staffy-boxer cross Frankie.| If the weather’s nice Tina and I will cook a late breakfast and have it out on the deck. We talk about the week, and about our daughters. Isabel is living in London and Claudia is living in Los Angeles, so we’re working out the different time zones and when to catch up with them. Thank god for FaceTime and things like that.
We often drop into Juno and Sons, just around the corner from us. It’s like a deli but they serve some sandwiches and coffee.| Sometimes it’s going to commercial galleries. There’s no particular routine. I’ve been trying to play more tennis, but I had a couple of injuries last year which stopped me doing a lot of that.
We have a very nice Mexican hammock so when the weather’s nice I try to do a bit of reading there. Reading is a mixture of essays and articles and newspapers, and some fiction. I’ve got too many books on the go. The second volumeI’ve been reading memoirs recently, also because I’ve been doing a lot of writing on the weekend – about parts of my own life, points where I took inspiration that changed things for later on.| We have friends over, or we go out, sometimes for work or often with friends.
I also love music, so I’ll read music reviews or put things in playlists that I can use while I’m driving. I listen to a lot of very new music.| We’re pretty much always at home. Before COVID, we almost never watched television. We just had the TV there for the occasional AFL match. But of course during lockdowns we got totally hooked on all these series, so we sometimes do watch quite a few of those, or a movie.
