Healthy living needs change as one ages past 50.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - For many individuals in the Fairbanks area, navigating the aging process can pose certain challenges. The month of May is celebrated as Older Americans Month, and in honor of this occasion Foundation Health Partners, along with the Fairbanks North Star Borough, is hosting a summit on the theme ‘Age-Friendly Fairbanks.’

“Our goal is to continuously improve on being age-friendly,” explained Foundation Health Parters’ Community Partnership Manager Carol Anthony. “So we are celebrating that we have joined the age-friendly communities and that sets us up to really start examining some things about our built environment and our social environment. So things like housing, transportation, access to healthcare, what we do for recreation.

The summit begins with a luncheon on Thursday, and continues with a full day’s range of activities and demonstrations in the Carlson Center on Friday, centered around healthy and active living for the over-50 community. This involves several classrooms with a revolving series of speakers who have been invited to share workshops on their areas of expertise.

“Like the stages of arthritis, and how to live comfortably as possible and some of the newer recommendations for arthritis,” offered Anthony. “How to respond in various stages of dementia is one that we’re very proud to have brought to Fairbanks.” “Fairbanks should be proud of the level of volunteerism that this summit shows,” Anthony added. “It shows we do care about people in our community as we age.”8,000-plus gallons of spilled gasoline a threat to Yukon tributary, EPA says
