The victim of a random stabbing incident that preceded the shooting death of a teenager in Perth has broken his silence from hospital. The man, aged in his 30s, was knifed by a radicalised 16-year-old boy he had never met late on Saturday and has been in the care of Royal Perth Hospital doctors ever since. On Wednesday, he issued a statement to say it was a “difficult time” as he processed what had unfolded.
Police deployed tasers as he launched at officers with a large kitchen knife, but they failed to halt the teen and were forced to shoot him. First aid was provided, but he could not be saved. It has since emerged that the boy had been part of a de-radicalisation program called Countering Violent Extremism since he was 14. He was also known to watch terrorism clips during class, and had once tossed a homemade explosive into a school toilet block.
