Sadiq Khan has won a third term as London mayor Conservatives lost major mayoral elections – with labour holding their seats in London, South Yorkshire, Liverpool and Greater Manchester. New maps have revealed just how much blue turned red over the weekend. Essex was one of the most highly contested areas for conservatives in this election cycle – but the Tories saw their councillor numbers fall by 13 in Basildon, with Labour gaining nine.
Maps show how inner London remains a Labour stronghold, while the more suburbs on the city’s outskirts leant Tory. Key mayoral elections in Liverpool, Manchester, South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire were won by Labour, who also claimed wins in York and North Yorkshire – an area which includes Rishi Sunak’s constituency – the East Midlands and the North East.
